Third-party economic analysis in 2020 found that comprehensive state methane rules are extremely cost effective, delivering a 30% return on investment for New Mexicans, including $1.2 billion in avoided air quality nonattainment costs and $126 million in human health benefits.
“Atmospheric concentrations of ozone in the state of New Mexico have risen rapidly in recent years, increasing the risk of violating the U.S. EPA’s National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for ground-level ozone. Many of the increases in ozone are concentrated in areas of increasing oil and gas production and, therefore, increasing air pollution.”
Strong rules are pending approval at the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Board (EIB).
