Though some progress is being made in the transition to cleaner forms of transportation, emissions from the transportation sector continue to contribute to poor air quality and the resulting serious respiratory health impacts throughout the United States, including here in New Mexico. Passenger vehicles and heavy-duty trucks account for a significant amount of the nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide emissions in the United States, as well as particulate matter and Volatile Organic Compound emissions.
Previous state greenhouse gas emissions inventories have indicated that transportation emissions make up approximately 20 percent of New Mexico’s greenhouse gas emissions. See Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s recent announcement on her plan to lower vehicle emissions.
